Richard Holder

Welcome to the home of Richard Holder's Model Railways.

My first serious attempt at railway modelling was the creation of a 'OO' loft layout in the 1970's and later another 'OO' layout which featured a narrow gauge branch line. This was built in a garage when my wife and I and our family lived in Warwickshire.

It was not until I retired in 2003 that I really developed my modelling skills and focussed on narrow gauge railways. Joining The 009 Society introduced me to many new friends, several of whom still regularly help operate my layouts at exhibitions.

My first attempt at modelling narrow gauge railways was a home-based layout entitled 'Nant Gwynant'. This was featured in the June 2008 edition of Railway Modeller.

This was soon followed by an extension called 'Borth-y-Mawddach' which appeared in the March 2009 issue.

The last extension, 'Porthdanwyg' featured in July 2009.

My first exhibition 009 layout, The Clydach Railway was built and first exhibited in 2010. It was featured in Railway Modeller in November 2010 with follow-up articles in May and June 2012.

Wantage Narrow Gauge Tramway followed and appeared in the September 2013 issue of Railway Modeller.

My third exhibition OO9 layout is a model of Launceston Steam Railway. This was first exhibited at NGSW at Shepton Mallet on 18 Feb 2017 Launceston was featured in Railway Modeller in May 2017.

During 2018 Woodbury Wharf was created by adapting a very small triangular layout that was originally built for a competition. The new layout was first exhibited at Exeter in July 2018 and appeared in Railway Modeller in Auguest 2019.
