When I built my first 009 exhibition layout, CLYDACH, my main aim was to create an attractive scenic with gradients, two stations and plenty of activity. The big compromise that I had to make was with the length of each station platform. These can only accommodate a loco and up to four bogie coaches.
Since 2010, I have always longed for a layout with a station that could accommodate long trains with eight or even 12 bogie coaches, hauled by some of my larger locomotives.
Penyffrydd was designed for exhibiting but did fit in a spare bedroom at home, so could be used as a “home” layout. The scene represents the next station up the valley from the estuary area depicted on CLYDACH.
Although in January 2022 the layout was nearing completion, sadly it has now been dismantled as my wife and I have moved to a smaller house which cannot accommodate the model.
All that now remains of the layout are the photographs and the YouTube video that you can see here
However, the buildings, trees, stone walls and much of the track-work has been salvaged and will appear in a new project once we are in the new property.
Penyffrydd Station was featured in the September 2023 issue of Railway Modeller Magazine.
